Aston Villa Must Appoint Former Wolves Boss

The idea of a former Wolves manager talking over the managerial role at Aston Villa might not appeal too greatly to the Villa faithful, however Mick McCarthy is a creditable candidate for the job, according to himself, and he has got a point.

"It is flattering," he said about the reported interest from Villa. "If the remit is for somebody that can get teams promoted, then I've got a pretty good CV for that, haven't I?

You can’t argue with the man.  The 57 year old boasts a CV more capable of providing the job Villa need, certainly more so than Paul Lambert, Tim Sherwood or Remi Garde who all contributed to what will be the relegation of one of the founding members of the Premier League, barring an unlikely miracle.

If you think of clubs in trouble over the years it more often than not is experience that will help halt the slide or as in what will be Aston Villa’s case, experience is now what is needed to get them back on the straight and narrow.

Talk of Gary Monk or Gary Neville at Aston Villa is surely just Villa going down the same path yet again.  Aston Villa need an experienced manager who has been there and done it in the Championship.

Mick McCarthy is right to big himself up for the job as he has the ambition and the proven track record to get teams promoted.

In 2003/04 McCarthy with Sunderland missed out on promotion to the Premier League with a Playoff Final defeat to Crystal Palace following a penalty shootout.  The following season Sunderland made no mistake and finished the season as Champions and earned promotion.

In the 2008/ 09 season he achieved the same faith with Wolves, getting them back into the top flight.  McCarthy got the distinction of being the first Wolves manager in thirty years to maintain the club's top flight position for two successive seasons.

On an extremely tight budget at Ipswich Town, McCarthy led his side to a sixth place finish last season before losing out to Norwich City in the Playoffs.

Sure McCarthy like any manager has suffered lows and highs in his career.  Promotion as well as relegation, he narrowly missed out on getting to the World Cup quarter finals with the Republic of Ireland in Japan & Korea 2002.

He deserves a shot at a big club, you could argue that Villa should be flattered to get him.  McCarthy should be managing in the Premier League.  Clubs like Swansea City, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa with Remi Garde all went foreign when searching for a new manager when one of the most experienced British based managers is doing a remarkable job with little money at Ipswich Town.

I’m all for give young managers a go and people like Gary Monk or Gary Neville deserve a shot, but the Aston Villa job and the work that is needed there is only for someone that holds the knowledge and experience to undertake such a challenge.

Clubs like Leicester City, Leeds United, Coventry City and Wolves (to name a few) all went from being a Premier League club to a League One club in a matter of seasons.  The fall from grace can be a very quick one.

Gary Neville found the Valencia job a tough one, Aston Villa with turmoil on and off the pitch might be a much tougher one.

It might help McCarthy that he has already turned grey.  The road ahead for Aston Villa is a long one but with the right appointment this time round, it might be that bit shorter.
