Is Ryan Giggs the right man to take over as the next Manchester United Manager?
That is the question the board of Manchester United will be faced with in 18 months time when Louis Van Gaal's three year contract will come to an end and as expected he will depart and retire from football management having restored United to the top of the English Premier League. (we hope)
A lot of people questioned the appointment of Alex Ferguson way back in 1986, just as they did with David Moyes and with Louis Van Gaal, however I feel the questions of some supporters expressing doubt in the appointment of Giggs as the next coach are valid. Some will say if he doesn't get the job then why was Louis Van Gaal almost forced to accept Giggs as his assistant?
The fact remains Giggs is too inexperienced to handle the pressure of managing one of the greatest clubs in the world. He did indeed take over from David Moyes for a short period after Moyes sacking but after what we witnessed under Moyes we have to cast doubt over the ability of Giggs or any inexperienced manager to cope with the high standards Moyes, a Premier League manager for over 10 years simply failed to handle. We have seen managers of huge experience in the Premier League crack under the pressure , Rafa Benitez and Kevin Keegan come to mind.
The pressure of leading Manchester United can be a lot to handle. People speak of Fergie following, and succeeding in the shadow of Busby, but football is totally different than what is was. Managers are not given time anymore, players are being bought and sold at an alarming rate. There is no settling in period, the financial stakes are too high. Back in 2013 David Moyes was regarded as one of Britain's top coaches, he got the United job, failed impeccably and now just over two years later he has had to go to Spain to get a job and is fighting to keep that job. You only go backwards after leaving Manchester United.
Ryan Giggs needs to go to a lower team possibly in the Championship and learn the trade of being the Gaffer, the man in charge, the man who has to have the answers. Yeah sure many ex United players have gone this route in the hope they might one day manage United or a top club challenging for honours, Ince, Keane, Bruce to name a few. They did not meet the standard but Ryan Giggs will have to prove himself and if he is good enough he will one day take over the hot seat at Old Trafford.
Louis Van Gaal will leave behind a young team including Memphis, Martial, Shaw, Pereira, Januzaj amongst others who by the time Van Gaal departs we hope they will have added to the trophies in the United cabinet, I feel United will be ready in 18 months time, if progress continues and these young players continue to perform as we are starting to see, then I believe we will be ready to challenge once again in Europe and also to go in search of title number 21.
Bringing Giggs in at that stage might halt the progression and I feel Giggs will always be "one of the lads" at United until he goes away and proves himself worthy as a manager in his own right to take the reigns. At lot can happen in the next 18 months in football management, Giggs might leave for a job elsewhere before Van Gaal departs, Another name not even mentioned might appear out of nowhere or Van Gaal himself might surprise us and his wife and decide to stay on after all.
You have to be the right man for the job and you have to have experience, these are the two things most people are required to have for any job. Gigg's record at United speaks for itself. I would hate for him to get the job and things go badly due to lack of experience to handle the massive step up. Giggs quite possibly is the right man for the job, but not after Louis Van Gaal.
