If today's media reports are to be believed then Shane Long could be packing his bags for either Liverpool or Tottenham.
Both Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino are both keen admirers of the Tipperary native. While Long has never been a 20 goal a season man he does offer a determination and a work ethic that would interest any club. His heading and jumping ability for a small man could also teach Marouane Fellaini of Manchester United a thing or two.
Spurs could see him as the ideal squad player perfect to play with Harry Kane if needed or a useful sub to come off the bench and change a game. While Liverpool might feel his playing style would be perfect for the style of play Jurgen Klopp is known for and is busy trying to implement at Anfield. With the loss of Danny Ings, the never ending Daniel Sturridge injury problems and the hot and cold Christian Beneteke, Long could be a useful asset.
At 28 years of age time is running out for Long to move to a big club with European ambitions. Having started his career at Cork City, it wasn't long ( excuse the pun) when he made his way to the English league with Reading. 2011 saw him move to West Bromwich Albion for £6 million. He later went on to join Hull City under Steve Bruce in January 2014. Steve Bruce then could not refuse an offer believed to be in the region of £12 million in August 2014 when Southampton came calling.Although Bruce didn't want to lose him the money was too good and Long was on his way.
With a career total of less than 100 goals, Long will not be a Luis Suarez or a Harry Kane banging in the goals but he will offer a never say die attitude and a hunger to run and run for his manager. Something Christian Benteke doesn't offer and something Klopp has noticed in Shane.
From an Irish point of view lets hope the Liverpool move comes off for Long and hopefully he will fare better than Robbie Keane did at the historic club.
