Chelsea are finalising a move for Brazil forward Alex Pato having made room in the squad with the somewhat surprising departure of Ramires to Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning.
While Ramires departure for £25 million may be good business financially speaking it is a strange decision as Ramires would be considered one of their most hard working players and one they could do with as they struggle to climb the league.
The imminent arrival of Pato however is an interesting one. The deal is expected to be a loan move with a few to a permanent deal for £8 million. Considering Chelsea’s healthy bank balance this could prove to be a great piece of business.
Pato has been around a long time but yet the Brazilian is only 26 years of age and has yet to hit his peak. If he could rediscover his impressive form that saw him make a name for himself at a very young age at Internacional he could be a real asset. That form convinced AC Milan to buy the promising forward in 2007. He helped them to a league and cup double in 2011.
Injuries however blighted his time there and he made the surprising decision to return home to Brazil with Corinthians in 2013 to try and rejuvenate his career. He went on loan to Sao Paulo following a bad spell with Corinthians. They also decided Pato was not a good investment so he return to Corinthians. They have been trying to sell him since yet no club considered taking the gamble on what was a talented player until Chelsea decided to give him a chance to resurrect his career.
His International career has suffered also. He has not played for his home nation since 2013 and missed what should have been a great occasion when his country hosted the World Cup 2014.
Pato is a frustrating talent that promised so much but gave us only glimpses. The injuries didn't help yet his rumoured partying lifestyle certainly doesn't. The move home to Brazil also failed to ignite what was a promising career as hoped. Pato now has the chance once again on a European stage to show the world people were right to talk of him in the same breath of Kaka and Pele. If he can Chelsea will have got a bargain.
