With the expected arrival of Leeds United right back Sam Byram to Everton many are speculating if Roberto Martinez is signing Byram as a replacement for Seamus Coleman should he leave in the summer.
It is unlikely that both Byram and Coleman will be at club going forward. Byram is too good a player to sit on the bench and Coleman will not want to make way for the young 22 year old defender. Although both players can play on the right wing this again is unlikely to be a future role for either player. Byram has yet to agree a move to Goodison Park with an offer from West Ham United also on the table the young Leeds defender has a choice to make. West Ham could offer more possibilities of first team football, but if Coleman decides his future lies elsewhere, Byram would be a perfect replacement.
If Martinez could manage to keep both players happy then he will have two great defenders to call upon. Either way the reported £3.7 million signing of Byram is a bargain even though his contract at the Elland Road club was winding down.
This summer is a crucial one in the future of Seamus Coleman. At the age of 27 it is a case of now or never if the Irish defender has aspirations of playing at a higher level with a Champions League side or if he wishes to try another league and culture. Everton are again unlikely to make the top four this season. Everton has been a great move for Coleman but players can go stale at clubs and he should look no further than across the defence to Leighton Baines who himself turned down a reported move to Manchester United in 2013 and now maybe the chance to play at a higher level has passed him by. Maybe Baines has no regrets with his decision but Coleman should take stock over the summer as he represents the Republic of Ireland in France Euro 2016 and decide where his future lies.
Manchester United, Bayern Munich, PSG and Chelsea were just some of the clubs rumoured to be interested in the former Sligo Rovers player. One would imagine clubs would be queuing up to snap up the Irishman should he decide to leave.
Every player is different but unlike Baines, Coleman should grab every opportunity going and test himself at the very highest level. Everton have gotten great service from Coleman and they would get back far more than the £60,000 David Moyes spent on the youngster in 2009. They also have a ready made replacement in Sam Byram if the deal goes through as expected, who himself is an exciting prospect and will be a huge asset to Everton going forward.
Coleman should put himself in the shop window this summer in France and make the move to better his chances of finishing his career with some trophies rather than just memories.
