Jurgen Klopp has
been a breath of fresh air to Liverpool and the Premier League. Liverpool fans are perhaps getting carried
away by the recent goal feast we have seen by Klopp’s side and in a way it is hard
not to believe Liverpool in the hype that they have finally got their man.
Rival fans, if we
are honest with ourselves find it hard not to like the guy. His enthusiasm for
the game is up there with the best of coaches.
His team at Borussia Dortmund won the love of approval of all football
fans for the way he brought passion to his side and the way he shows passion
on the touchline. His line this week "I can't
forget this f**king loss to Crystal Palace. If we'd won this, I would say my
first ten games were ok." just shows his love for the game.
He may have gone to the Etihad and beat Manchester City but he is still
frustrated at a loss to Crystal Palace which of course he should be. My point being he could have glossed over
that with the unexpected and thoroughly deserved win against City, and of
course the win at Chelsea which in other seasons might have been a bigger achievement
but given Chelsea’s struggles this season I feel he didn’t get the credit he deserved
for that win. Stamford Bridge is never
an easy place to go and win, let alone score three goals.
Liverpool have played all the top teams away from home already this season.
Having gone to Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United,
Man City, Tottenham and Everton and in 6th position just 6 points
off the top the gambler in me would be going to the local bookies for a cheeky
bet on Liverpool finally ending their 26 year wait to win the top prize in
English football. Having brushed
Southampton aside in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup mid week they could
very well end up with a league and cup double this season. Liverpool must first address their home form,
if they could produce their recent away performances at home then Klopp could
very well have a title challenge on his hands.
With Klopp yet to
invest in his team the period waiting for the January transfer window to open
has given him the chance to assess his side and get to know the players many of
whom he would not have known previously.
He will need to keep Daniel Sturridge fit, as we saw on Wednesday he is
vital to Liverpool and when fit is one of the best in the league. His connections with Dortmund and his knowledge of European football not to mention is likeability factor will I feel
bring Liverpool back into the frame of clubs that top European players will
want to play for. Something Brendan Rodgers failed to do,
even with Champions League Football on offer last season.
Steven Gerrard was
back training with his old teammates this week and he too would have noticed a
different atmosphere around Melwood.
It
is unfair to totally criticize Brendan Rodgers reign and things could have been
totally different for him and the club had they not missed out on winning the
league in 2014.
But I feel had Klopp got
the job earlier, Steven Gerrard would still be a Liverpool player
today. I feel he may regret his decision
to move to LA. Klopp too would have loved to have had his experience to call
upon. He is a competitive player with plenty to offer still, and would have been a positive influence in the dressing room. It’s a decision he must live with but one he may
live to regret, especially if Liverpool go on to lift the Premier League title
this season, which with the way the season is going is not such a unrealistic
notion as perhaps we would have thought at the start of the season.
